Concrete mixer trucks

Concrete mixer trucks

A Concrete Mixer Truck is designed to transport ready-mix concrete efficiently from the plant to construction sites. Its key feature is a large rotating drum that continuously mixes the concrete during transit, preventing segregation and premature setting.

These trucks are equipped with hydraulic systems for drum rotation and often include onboard water tanks for consistency adjustment.

Standard capacities range from 6 to 12 cubic meters, with various chassis configurations for different project scales.

Their main advantages include maintaining concrete quality, enabling direct on-site discharge via chutes, and significantly improving operational efficiency for projects like building construction and road paving.

    Working principle and key components

The core of a concrete mixer truck lies in its rotating mixing drum. During operation, the engine's power is extracted via a power take-off (PTO) to drive a hydraulic pump, converting mechanical energy into hydraulic energy. A hydraulic motor then converts this hydraulic energy back into mechanical energy. A speed reducer decreases the rotational speed and increases the torque, ultimately driving the mixing drum to rotate at a constant speed.

The mixing drum is equipped with continuous spiral blades welded inside. When the drum rotates clockwise, the blades continuously lift and tumble the concrete, achieving mixing and preventing segregation. When unloading is required, the drum rotates counter-clockwise, and the blades push the concrete towards the drum opening, guiding it through the discharge chute to the designated location.

    Selection and Operation Points

Choosing the right concrete mixer truck and operating it correctly is crucial for project efficiency and cost.

    • Selection Based on Project Requirements

Primarily consider the project scale and construction environment. Large infrastructure projects require large-capacity (e.g., 12m³ or more) rear-discharge or pump trucks; while in urban areas with narrow roads or for maintenance projects, smaller capacity, more flexible front-discharge or smaller mixer trucks should be selected.
    • Standardized Operation and Maintenance

Operating procedures must be strictly followed. For example, the mixing drum must be kept at a low speed (usually 2-3 rpm) during transport; there is a strict time limit from loading to unloading (generally no more than 1.5 hours) to prevent initial setting of the concrete; the mixing drum must be thoroughly cleaned after each unloading to prevent concrete clumping.
    • Focus on Core Component Maintenance

The drive unit (power take-off, hydraulic system) and mixing drum are key maintenance areas. Ensure the hydraulic oil is clean and change it regularly, and clean the hydraulic oil cooler promptly to prevent overheating. Additionally, the mixing drum must be cleaned after each day's work, and the blade wear must be checked.
